Terrazzo tile flooring originated in Italy as far back as the 16th century as a way in which to reuse offcuts of stone. It’s created by taking these offcuts and mixing them with either epoxy resin or concrete.

The resulting composite material is beautiful and terrazzo tiles now come in all manner of colours. One of the beauties of this type of flooring is that no tiles are ever the same. The pattern is dictated by the way in which the different materials mix.

Although it was first created in Italy, terrazzo has gone through a number of peaks in popularity, most notably during the 1920s Art Deco period. One place where you will see terrazzo tiles is the Hollywood Walk of Fame in LA. But it’s also found in bathrooms, kitchens and many public buildings with high foot traffic.

In fact, this use highlights another of terrazzo’s properties – its durability. The first stars on the famous Walk of Fame were laid in 1960 and are still looking great today. The iconic pink colour is also a nod to terrazzo’s versatility.

Terrazzo tile flooring is again growing in popularity among homeowners, with these kinds of tiles named as one of the top trends for bathroom flooring in 2025. Its enduring appeal lies in the texture and pattern it offers to flooring.

What’s more, the vast range of colourways makes it suitable in many contexts and different designs, broadening its appeal still further. Then, of course, it is a sustainable material that uses offcuts from elsewhere, which is increasingly important.

While terrazzo tiles are highly durable, they can still need restoration if they haven’t been cared for well. If you have bought a property that features terrazzo tiles and you want to bring them back to their former glory, you may need some support to do so.

This is because the composite nature of terrazzo tiles can make it hard to patch them yourself without altering the overall appearance of the floor and making your fix look very obvious.

However, with specialist terrazzo tile restoration, your floor can look as good as new and last for many more years. Once your flooring has been restored, all you have to do is keep on top of cleaning to ensure it stays as bright as the stars on Hollywood Blvd.
