Wooden floors have many great qualities. Not only are they aesthetically attractive and permanently fashionable; they are also very robust and easy to clean.

At the same time, they are not indestructible. Wooden floors can be chipped, scratched, or dented. The good news, however, is they can be repaired even after quite significant damage. They can be sanded or refinished time and again, which is a particular advantage wood has over laminate, which, while harder to scratch, cannot be repaired in this way.

If your wooden floor has picked up some significant damage, it makes sense to bring in the professionals to do a top restoration job and get it looking as good as new. However, you might ask just when this is necessary, and if there are times when the damage is more minor and you can fix it yourself.

There are indeed some problems you may be able to repair yourself. Dents can be a good example of this. These can be caused by impacts or by having the legs of furniture compress the wood, such as a table, a heavy chest, or a stepladder. There are actually several ways you can fix these if they are not too severe.

If they are very shallow, you can sand them down so they are no longer noticeable, by taking away the raised edges. A second method is to use wood filler putty to fill up the crater. Once dry, it will be unnoticeable.

The third is quite ingenious and uses water. Place a wet cloth over the dent and use a steamer like an iron. The combination of moisture and heat means the wood soaks up the water and then expands, so that compacted wood effectively rebounds to regain its old shape.

By remembering these tips, you may find any dents in your wooden floor are easy enough to fix. But if the damage is more severe, that is when you should call in the experts.
